Update on a couple of recent IFST-NI relevant 'Happenings'
1. NORTHERN IRELAND RESEARCH STUDENT AWARDED IFST-SPONSORED POST FELLOWSHIP TO WORK AT WESTMINSTER
Anne Richmond, a second year Queens University PhD student from Ballymoney who is carrying out her research at the Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute, Hillsborough, has been awarded a prestigious Institute of Food Science & Technology (IFST)-sponsored Fellowship at the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) at Westminster. Anne commenced her Fellowship on 1 November, and will be preparing scientific briefing material for members of the Houses of Commons and Lords during the tenure of the Fellowship. This will be a tremendous opportunity to experience the working procedures of the Commons and Lords as well as gaining valuable skills in scientific communication.
2. Northern Ireland Food Scientist accepts Science Council Invitation to Chair its new Education Programme Co-ordinating Group
Prof Jack Pearce (Past President of the Institute of Food Science & Technology and currently Chair of its Education & Careers Committee) has accepted an invitation from the Science Council to chair its new Education Programme Co-ordinating Group. The purpose of this Group is to shape the Science Council’s programme of meetings and discussions on education issues with the aim of supporting the work of Science Council member bodies and informing and engaging with them on topics of common concern or current policy issues. The Group will prioritise topics and issues for the work programme as well as advising on speakers and meeting formats. This should ensure that all interests across the breadth of the Science Council membership are included within the programme of the Group’s work.
